Following exercise makes sense only:
If you have a worthy Table Tennis bat with rubber which lost its grip (Wood/Ply blade is good condition) and when rebuild can give excellent performance.
If you are DIY type.
The Finish might not be equivalent to the Factory made bats (But be proud it was/is made by you).
The materials used here are easily available in Hardware Stores.
Materials Required:
1. Pre Made Bat/ Ply Blade.
2. TT Rubber - 2Nos.
3. Silicon Carbide Sheets (Emery Paper) -P220 Grit, 320 Grit, 400 Grit (Increasing Number --> represent fine sanding effect)
4. Sharp knife.
5. Scissors
6. Hair Dryer
7. Water Based Glue

I have used Fevicol MR (available in India) (I'm Unaware of its ITTF approval)

I have used following Rubbers,
Yasaka Mark V Max Table Tennis Rubber (Fore Hand) - Speed +Spin Control
GKI Nano Force Max Table Tennis Rubber (Back Hand) - Slow for Blocking / Minimum Spin.
I strongly suggest carefully choose rubber that matches your style. Because Blade contributes about 20% to the speed or spin. 80% is determined by rubber. (courtesy: www.pingskills.com)
There are Three Sections:
Section I- Removing the Old Rubber+Sponge
Section II- Smoothing the blade surface
Section III- Sticking New Rubber Sheet to Blade
Removing the Old Rubber+Sponge
1. Generally TT Bats made of Blades, Rubber and Sponge. Sponge is stuck on to the surface of the blade. In Pre made bats the Sponge removal can be messy part. It would be extremely difficult to peel it as once piece.
2. Remove the sponge from the blade (Not only Rubber).It might peel off as chunks. Some might stick to the surface of the blade Still. (Don't worry we can remove it)
3. Once we have satisfactorily removed the sponge, we need to smoothen the blade surface to stick new set of rubbers. if the sponge did come off as one piece skip the next section.
Smoothing the blade surface.
1. If we were unlucky, There may be glue and sponge residues sticking on the surface of the blade.
2. Use Silicon Carbide grading sheets, starting with 220 Grit (Coarse Grain) Start Rubbing in outward moving circle movements and apply pressure only when required else the surface of the blade might be scratched.
3. Glue and sponge may be sticking on the edges of the blades more than at the center. So use small 2 inch x 2 inch to rub the edges.
4. Then use the 320 Grit to smoothen the surface and blow the dust way.
5. Wipe away the dust using clean cotton cloth.
6. Use 400 Grit Paper to further smoothen the surface and wipe off.
7. Gently Use Scotch-Brite® Scrub Pad (yes Utensil Cleaner) to rub off residues and dust and wipe with cloth.
8. Inspect the surface of the blade, By Now there should be No Sponge or Glue Residuals if we see any residuals repeat step 4,5,6,7
Sticking New Rubber Sheet to Blade.
1. After the completion of smoothening process, Remove the packing of the rubber and it should be dust free before we apply glue.
2. Take about an thin layer of glue (about 5ml of glue) and Spread evenly (Unidirectional) on the sponge side using foam before it starts drying.
3. Glue should be allowed to air dry to translucent layer from white opaque. Takes about 5 mins.
4. we can speeden the process by using hair dryer. (Ignore if we you dint have the Dryer)
5. Similarly Glue the surface of blade and spread evenly and thinly, Allow it to Air Dry.
6. Stick/Roll the Sponge Side and Blade with ITTF Approved logo near the Handle.
7. See thorough there should be no voids/air pockets.
8. Roll the Top of the rubber using some cylindrical container (like 1 foot PVC Pipe/Any thing in Cylindrical Shape).
9. Cut the extra rubber on the sides to the shape of the blade using a sharp scissor/ Sharp Razor.
10. It might be bit tricky to cut the edges take care that you dont injure yourself.
11. Follow the same process to stick on the other side of the blade too.
12. Apply Pressure (For about 5-7 Hours) by Stocking Pile of books over the bat, to get a firm sticking.
